With promises to pay off the team’s £500 million debt and put money towards the long overdue refurbishment of the 76,000-seat stadium, the Qatari financier has made United an offer of about £5.5 billion. United’s potential new owner will get rid of the salary cap that was introduced under coach Erik ten Hag to reduce the club’s wage bill after Cristiano Ronaldo departed earlier this season.

The ‘ Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ states that United will not pay any players more than a weekly salary ceiling of £200,000. Since Ronaldo received a reported £385,000 per week during his second stint at the club, which ended in controversy after he insulted the team and Ten Hag in an interview before his contract was terminated, the rule was informally named after the Portuguese legend.

The choice may improve United’s prospects of drawing superstars to Old Trafford. Neymar is reportedly in negotiations with the Premier League team to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Eliminating the regulation would also help United keep hold of the talents they currently have, such Marcus Rashford, who is rumoured to be reluctant to sign a new deal due to the compensation being offered.
