Saudi Arabia coach Herve Renard made tactical alterations to his lineup for the final Group C match against Mexico. Hassan Tambakti was reintroduced to the team after Mohammed Al-Breik was injured.  Coach Tata Martino made four changes to his starting lineup, including the addition of attackers Orbelin Pineda and Henry Martin. Edson Alvarez and Jorge Sanchez both returned to the starting lineup.

The score was 0-0 at the end of the first half between Saudi Arabia and Mexico. The Mexicans have had the most shots in this encounter, taking shots from all around the field. Their efforts might have been recognized if it hadn’t been for a steadfast Saudi performance. Bodies have been sacrificed, clearances have been granted, and the Saudis have survived a 45-minute onslaught.

Mexico scored the game-winning goal just minutes into the second half. Forward Henry Martin gets onto a deflection from a corner to score. Luis Chave scored the World Cup’s second free kick goal to double Mexico’s lead. A left-footed curler that ripped through the goal of Saudi keeper Al Owais.

Argentina quickly went up 2-0 against Poland. Mexico only needed one more goal to advance. They came perilously close to doing it several times. Hirving Lozano scored but the goal was called out for offside.  Martin should have scored but volleyed over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat, putting his head into his hands.

More agony was to come when replacement Uriel Antuna surged away behind the Saudi defence and finished, but the offside flag was raised once more. And, as Mexico urgently pushed forward in stoppage time, Saudi Arabia broke through and dealt the last blow to El Tri’s dreams with a goal from Salem Al-Dawsari.
