The drivers spent four hours after practice on Friday discussing whether the race should be run. After an extraordinary series of events, team bosses emerged from the meetings to say: “We will be racing.” The FIA has also confirmed the same, saying they have been assured by security agencies and the Saudi Arabian government that the event is secure.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Yemen’s Houthi Rebels. The outfit has been battling the Saudi-backed government. Meanwhile the Formula 1 chiefs subsequently said they will be monitoring the situation but later confirmed the race would go ahead.

A statement from Formula 1 said, “We are awaiting further information from the authorities on what has happened.”

Saudi Arabia GP Live – Aramco Explosion LIVE UPDATES: The drivers went into a meeting with Domenicali and managing director Ross Brawn about an hour after the end of practice.

The meeting did not end for another four hours, as various senior figures came and went.

What exactly happened around Saudi Arabia Grand Prix? The blast was heard during the first free practice session of the weekend on Friday.

A fire broke out at the Aramco site in Jeddah. Black smoke is seen coming out of the facility and was easily seen from high points around the city. The terror attack and blast sight was just 12 miles from the Saudi Arabian GP circuit

The smoke was also shown on the TV while the cameraman showed live footage during the latter stages of the FP1 session. F1 reporter Chris Medland wrote on his social media that the F1 bosses are “awaiting further information from the authorities regarding what has happened at the Aramco facility”.

The cause of the explosion is still not clear. It comes days after the missile attack on a fuel depot in the city. After the previous attack, the F1 bosses were monitoring the situation very closely. Meanwhile, the flights heading into the city are told to remain out of the city as of now.

Even Max Verstappen thought his car was on fire. He had a word with his team on the radio saying, “I can smell burning… is it my car?” It was later confirmed by them that his car was not the source of the smell.
