San Marino vs England- Match Report

In truth, England needed only a point against the world’s 210th and lowest-ranked footballing nation to seal the top spot in Group I so the only real question was how many goals they would deliver to mark the occasion.

Harry Maguire began the rout with a sixth-minute header and Filippo Fabbri scored an own goal before Kane took over to put England 6-0 ahead before halftime.

Emile Smith-Rowe marked his first England start with the seventh and even after Kane was substituted the punishment continued for San Marino who had Dante Rossi sent off for a second yellow card.

Tyrone Mings, substitute Tammy Abraham, and Bukayo Saka all got on the scoresheet in a farcically one-sided match that did little for the reputation of international football.

Harry Kane’s impressive performance-

Ian Wright and Roy Keane heaped praise on the Three Lions skipper, labeling the 28-year-old as an ‘elite’ scorer during the half-time break.

We are talking about an elite goalscorer, you can only beat what’s put in front of you,‘ Wright said during the interval.

England are being clinical and professional,‘ Keane added. ‘The biggest challenge is the surface. They are keeping it simple and getting it into the box.

England boss Gareth Southgate accompanied Wright and Keane on praising Kane at full-time in San Marino, joking that England’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney would’ve been on to him to take him off to stop him scoring any more in the second half.

If we left him on another half an hour, we would have had Wayne Rooney’s family on the phone,‘ Southgate laughed after the game. ‘He is a phenomenal goalscorer, we wanted to give him the chance tonight and he took it well.

After Kane joined him on 48 England goals, former striker Gary Lineker wrote on Twitter: ‘Hello @HKane, welcome to the 48 goal club. I suspect your membership will expire within minutes, but it’s been a pleasure to have you alongside.
