Bayern Munich faced Manchester City for the Champions League quarter-final first-leg match which they lost 3-0 to the English team. Tensions rose high among the players and it got better of Sadio Mane in the dressing room when he punched his teammate Leroy Sane. Mane was immediately suspended for at least one game when he wasn’t selected for their next Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim. However, coach Tuchel confirmed that he will be included in the squad against Man City, but will decide later if he will start Mane for the match.

His punishment did not end there as now he has been fined a club-record humongous amount of €350,000. This is the highest fine amount the club has ever given to any player. As a factor for comparison, Frank Ribery was involved in a similar incident when he punched his teammate Arjen Robben on the pitch during their Champions League match against Real Madrid. He was fined for the incident as well, but the amount was €50,000.

Apparently, the club had the right to cut the player’s one-month salary. However, they opted out of such a severe punishment. Coach Thomas Tuchel addressed the issue when he said that the club does not tolerate such kind of behavior, but the entire thing was resolved. President Herbert Hainer confirmed the fine amount and said, “The fine hurts him – even with his salary.”

Before Mane was fined, coach Tuchel said, “This was too much – he apologised and I believe him. It was important that he stays in training, but he is suspended and he will be fined. I don’t know where the money will go, the club and the player will decide. It is not my highest priority… We don’t need situations like that to prove our squad is alive. We don’t tolerate things like that.”

Bayern Munich is hosting Manchester City at their home ground Allianz Arena on Wednesday for the Champions League quarter-final second-leg match. Overturning a 3-0 goal deficit is not easy, but for a club, like Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena, it’s not impossible. Ahead of the match, Man City coach Pep Guardiola said that the incident would not be a weak point. It could rather strengthen the team.

Coach Pep Guardiola said, “sometimes you need conflict to make the team more together, I am pretty sure of that. It’s not a weak point, it will be a strong point against us.” Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery said similar things after their conflict back in 2012. They said that this only made their partnership at the club stronger over time. Bayern Munich management and coach can only hope that history will repeat itself after such an incident.
