SA beat IND 1st ODI: India lose by 31 runs – India’s post-Virat Kohli era began with a crushing 31-run defeat to South Africa in the 1st ODI at Boland Park. Some poor decision making from stand-in captain KL Rahul, middle-order failure and twin centuries from Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen helped South Africa take a 1-0 lead despite Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Shardul Thakur’s half-centuries. SA skipper Temba Bavuma opted to bat first winning the toss. While it seemed KL Rahul would be a happy man with losing the toss after Jasprit Bumrah sent Janneman Malan back early, it wasn’t the case. It was the mammoth 204-run 4th wicket stand between Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen that haunted India as South Africa posted 296/4 in 50 overs.

But skipper KL Rahul will also have to take responsibility for the embarrassing loss. Despite talking at length about the need of a sixth bowler in ODIs, he stuck to his five bowling options and didn’t call Venkatesh Iyer for even an over.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya was shown the door due to his lack of bowling action. But after under-utilising Venkatesh Iyer in the T20I series against NZ, he was not even called for an over even when India’s five regular bowlers failed to take wickets and break the partnership. In the end, Temba Bavuma scored 110 while Rassie van der Dussen smashed unbeaten 129 as South Africa posted 296.
“Venkatesh Iyer was not brought on as there was turn on the wicket and the spinners were doing well. Fast bowlers were not used much in the middle, and the spinners were employed,” Shikhar Dhawan said after the match.

During the chase, India were off to a steady start with Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul putting up a 46-run stand. After KL Rahul was dismissed, Virat Kohli and Dhawan brought up a 92-run partnership, taking India to 136/1. Kohli smashed 63rd ODI fifty while Dhawan slammed 79 off 84.
But Shikhar Dhawan’s wicket triggered a collapse. From 136/1, India were down to 199/7 in just 13 overs. The middle-order once again failed with Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer all failing to make a mark with the bat.
However, India will be happy with how Shardul Thakur batted. His 50 off 43 will boost India’s lower-order confidence while also give India a lot to think about the seam-bowling all-rounder option.
