It was a brief but telling remark that helped put an end to a turbulent period at the club following Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan. In it, he said he had no regard for United manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese star went on to criticise the club’s state, prior managers, and players before his contract was inevitably terminated.
It left him without a team ahead of the World Cup. Ronaldo has caused even more angst subsequently, this time in his international boss Fernando Santos. Santos felt compelled to withdraw from his team’s match against Switzerland.

Ten Hag was further asked how he is prepared for the possibility that some of his stars would travel directly from the World Cup final to a League Cup match against Burnley on December 21.
‘We had a plan, we have prepared the players with what the plan is so there can’t be any confusion about what the programme is. “
‘We make the players aware of the fact that, after you are out of the World Cup, you have to return to the club and the league immediately goes on. You have to be ready for that but I think our players are used to it. ‘
With Ronaldo gone, United manager Erik ten Hag will be able to concentrate on establishing his long-term vision at the club. He earlier stated that young players might play a vital part after impressing during the international break. Ten Hag’s team is presently fifth in the Premier League position, three points behind Tottenham with one game remaining.
