A club statement read, “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. “Following talks with Manchester United, we’ve mutually agreed to end our contract. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish Man Utd all the best,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner added.

Ronaldo made a fairytale return to Manchester United last season, signing from Serie A giants Juventus on an initial two-year deal. While the Portuguese managed to score a club-leading 18 goals in the first season, his relationship with the club began to break down under interim boss Ralf Rangnick. New manager Erik ten Hag also used the 37-year-old sporadically, often starting him in Europa League matches.

Since the summer, Ronaldo has actively sought an exit from the club, citing his desire to play Champions League football. However, the Portuguese failed to drum up sufficient interest and had to settle for a bit part role at Old Trafford. The 37-year-old did make headlines often, failing to report to preseason while also refusing to come on as a sub in a game against Tottenham.

The tipping point however was achieved with his Talk TV interview with Piers Morgan, where Ronaldo lambasted the club for ‘betraying’ him. Ronaldo criticised the ownership, Ten Hag and former players in a 90-minute interview, unsanctioned by the club. The Red Devils pursued legal action following the release, and have officially decided to mutually terminate theRonaldo’s contract. The 37-year-old had a £500,000 per week deal until June, with an option of an extra year.
