Rohit Sharma dropped a catch in the slips in the second over, hurt his hand, and had to go off the field, Bangladesh vs India, 2nd ODI, Dhaka, December 7, 2022

Currently, Rohit Sharma has stiffness in the thumb. With the all-important Australia series coming up, physios don’t want to rush his return. India have already paid for rushing Jasprit Bumrah’s return ahead of T20 World Cup.

After learning of Rohit Sharma’s injury status, Rahul Dravid-led team management said no to his inclusion in the 2nd Test. While Rohit can bat even at this point, the physios feel that fielding would aggravate his injury further.

If he hurts his thumb again, the Indian captain may miss the two upcoming series against SriLanka and NewZealand. He could also be doubtful for the Australia series.

Captain in Bangladesh, KL Rahul avoided questions on Rohit Sharma’s return on Sunday. Abhimanyu Easwaran is in Bangladesh as the Rohit Sharma replacement.

“Rohit had gone back to India after hurting his left thumb while fielding in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur on December 7. Abhimanyu Easwaran has come in as his replacement. About Rohit, we may be able to know (his status) in the next day or two, even I am not aware of it,” Rahul said at the post-match press conference.

How did Rohit Sharma get injured? –

Rohit Sharma injured himself in the second over of the 2nd ODI. He dived low to take a catch in the slips of Anamul Haque. Not only did he fail to get a hold of the ball, but was taken off the field. Rohit did not take the field with vice-captain KL Rahul leading the side. He visited a hospital and his finger was heavily bandaged while in the dressing room.

The 35-year-old opted against batting, until absolutely necessary walking in at No.9 on Wednesday. He looked troubled and used less of his bottom hand which was strapped. Rohit managed a 27-ball half-century, taking India agonisingly close to a series-levelling win.
