Records skipper Rohit Sharma can break on the way to lifting the Asia Cup 2023 title.

The Asia Cup 2023 is less than a month away, and Team India is prepping to win the tournament for the seventh time. India are going into the tournament on the back of a 2-1 series win against the West Indies. This will be the 14th ODI edition of the multi-national event, and India will aim to use the tournament to prepare for the World Cup 2023 at home. However, to do so, Rohit Sharma will have to lead the team by example, and in the process, the skipper can break these records:

Reach 10,000 ODI Runs

Rohit Sharma currently has 9837 runs in ODI cricket in 244 matches. Skipper Rohit Sharma will become the 15th cricketer to breach the 10000-run mark in ODIs and the 6th Indian cricketer to reach the 10,000-run mark.

He just needs 173 runs to reach the milestone. If he achieves the feat in the tournament, he will become the second-quickest player to reach the milestone, after teammate Virat Kohli (213 matches).

Most matches played by an Indian in the Asia Cup

Skipper Rohit Sharma played his debut Asia Cup game in 2008. Since then, Rohit has represented India on 22 occasions. In terms of matches played, he sits behind just all-time great and idol Sachin Tendulkar.

The master blaster has played 23 matches in the tournament’s history. During his 15-year Asia Cup journey, the Mumbai batter has been part of the winning squad three times (2010, 2016, and 2018).

Rohit will surpass the little master after he plays India’s second game of the group stage against Nepal.

First Indian to score 1000 runs in the Asia Cup

Only two players (Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara) have crossed the 1000-run mark in the event. The Indian skipper is 5th in terms of most runs, 255 runs shy of the 1000 mark. Once again, Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of Rohit, having made 971 runs in 23 games.

India can play 5 games if they reach the Super Fours stage and 6 if they reach the final. So, the Indian skipper just needs 255 runs in 5-6 games to break the record.

Rohit Sharma is well known for his hitting prowess and is just behind Chris Gayle (553) in the most sixes hit in international cricket. Rohit Sharma needs 20 more sixes to go past the ‘Universe Boss’ and become the player with the most sixes in cricket. In terms of his record in the Asia Cup.

Rohit Sharma currently stands fourth in the most sixes hit by a player. Ahead of him are Suresh Raina (18), Sanath Jayasuriya (23), and Shahid Afridi (26). 17 out of his 534 sixes have come in the Asia Cup, and knowing how much easy power he has, the opener can break the record without breaking a sweat.
