Chelsea said in a statement: ‘Defender Reece James underwent assessment earlier today after being substituted during the second half of last night’s 2-0 Premier League victory over AFC Bournemouth due to a knee injury.’
‘Scan results have regrettably confirmed a setback for the 23-year-old, with Reece now set to be ruled out for up to a month.’
The 23-year-old was initially expected to play at right-back for Gareth Southgate’s team at the World Cup in Qatar, but the England international’s knee injury against AC Milan prevented him from making a full recovery.
In the six Premier League games he was absent from, Potter’s team managed just one victory and two draws, which corresponded with Chelsea’s dismal run of play leading up to the competition. On Sunday, Chelsea will play struggling Premier League team Nottingham Forest. Chelsea is now eighth in the league and is six points behind Tottenham in fourth.
