The reason being that Alaba voted for Lionel Messi rather than Karim Benzema in FIFA’s Best Awards. Leo Messi ended up winning the award but the Real Madrid fans did not hold themselves back and crossed the line showing their displeasure towards Alaba. The 30-year-old former Bayern Munich star did not choose Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema in the first place, despite other players giving their own teammates priority. Soon after this, #AlabaOut started trending on Twitter. He then also started receiving racist abuse on his social media. There were monkey emojis on many of Alaba’s recent social media posts.

Alaba then had to come out on Twitter and offer an explanation as to why he voted as he did. It was surprising that Alaba had to even make a statement like this to justify his decision.

The Austrian national team vote for this award as a team, not me alone. Everyone in the team council is able to vote and that’s how it’s decided.

Real Madrid has yet to make a statement about this incident. But, it should not be long before Los Blancos decide to come out and condemn the people who have resorted to racial abuse on their player.
