Ravindra Jadeja Injury – IND vs NZ Series: Fit or Unfit? As things stand, even BCCI and selectors at ren’t sure about Ravindra Jadeja. The premier all-rounder was set to return for the India vs NewZealand ODI series after clearing a fitness test at the NCA. However, selectors decided against his selection. The reason is murky. While he did pass the fitness test, NCA physios did not issue him clearance. Selectors believe he still needs to be at 100% before returning. On Friday, Chetan Sharma-led new selection committee announced three squads at once. But Jadeja found place only for first two Tests against Australia starting next month. However, it also came with the condition that the all-rounder must pass fitness test.

“He did pass the initial fitness test. But the NCA still believes he is not yet at 100%. Considering his history of serious injuries, the selectors did not want to rush a return. The Australia series will be far more important than the NewZealand series. That is why he was not considered for the white-ball series,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Jadeja FIT or UNFIT? – As things stand, Jadeja is still officially unfit. After being ruled out of the Bangladesh and SriLanka series, Jadeja returned to NCA for further fitness assessments. While he did pass the tests, NCA physios believe he is still not at 100%.

In the meantime, he will continue with his rehab. There are also talks about him playing a Ranji Trophy match for Saurashtra before returning to Indian team. However, it’s a call that the selectors will take only after his final fitness test.

“He will be fine hopefully by Australia series. He is an important member of the Test and ODI team. That is why we did not want to risk him in the NZ series. One should understand that he is coming from surgery and it’s always tricky. As for Ranji, it is up to the selectors and NCA whether he should get some match practice,” the official said.

Ravindra Jadeja FITNESS: All you need to know about all-rounder’s struggle

  • Jadeja returned from UAE during the Asia Cup 2022 with a knee injury.
  • He suffered the injury on West Indies tour. However, it wasn’t serious at that time.
  • But an off-day exercise jarred his knee further and he had to undergo immediate surgery in Mumbai.
  • The surgery ruled him out of T20 World Cup.
  • While he was supposed to be available for the Bangladesh tour, his recovery is taking longer than usual.
  • After being named for the Bangladesh series, he was removed and asked to report to the NCA.
  • He underwent further rehab and rest.
  • After campaigning in Gujarat elections for wife Rivaba  Jadeja, he reported back to the NCA.
  • He did clear the fitness test initially but he was still not at his 100% fitness.
  • Hence, the BCCI medical team has asked him for further rehab and further fitness assessment and test at the end of this month.
  • If he gets fit in the meantime, he maybe asked to play in teh Ranji Trophy to get some red-ball match practice.

However, it should be noted that it will be a tough for the all-rounder to take on Australian challenge straightaway. Jadeja has not played any cricket since August-September Asia Cup. Hence, the selectors are deliberating whether he should go back to domestic for some match practice with the red ball before donning the blue colours once again.

Saurashtra are set to make it to the quarterfinals as things stand. And a call will be made on whether he will play in the Ranji Trophy only after he clears the final fitness assessment.

No Jadeja in T20s? – Meanwhile, along with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja too is set to miss more T20s. With ICC World Cup and Test getting priority, selectors want to manage Jadeja’s workload considering his history of injuries.

“Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli exit from the Indian T20 team is permanent. Anything can happen in future but for now we need to move on. Move on and plan the squad for 2024 T20 World CUP. Unfortunately, they don’t fit into the new scheme of things,” a senior BCCI official earlier told InsideSport.

India’s Test squad for the first two Tests against Australia: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R. Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav.

Note: Ravindra Jadeja’s inclusion in the squad is subject to fitness.
