The Ranji Trophy was scheduled to kick off on January 13 but was put on hold amid the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

While the situation continues to go spiral as each day progresses, president Sourav Ganguly has reassured the state associations that the tournament will take place this year.

As per Cricbuzz, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has given reassurance that the Ranji Trophy will resume this season despite its postponement due to the rise in Omicron cases. The BCCI reportedly had called an emergency meeting on January 3rd to discuss the requirements for the season to begin in attendance of the office-bearers and the broadcasters.

However, with cases growing, especially among member state associations the BCCI decided that hosting the tournament wasn’t worth the risk.

A BCCI official was quoted saying, “We want to see how the Covid situation evolves. We will try to hold the games but at this stage they are on hold.”

The plan is to complete the league stage before the start of the IPL in April and then hold the knockouts after the league, an idea that was planned last year too, albeit without success.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who himself was diagnosed with COVID-19 recently, sent a mail to state associations promising to come through on Ranji Trophy 2022. As per Cricbuzz, the contents of the mail were as follows: “The BCCI would like to reassure (you) that it will do everything to restart the domestic season once the Covid situation is under control. We are committed to holding the remaining tournaments for this season. The Board will come back to you with a revised plan.”

Ganguly also explained why the BCCI had to take the call of postponement and hoped that state associations would be understanding of their predicament. The BCCI president wrote, “As you are aware, we had to put on hold the current ongoing domestic season due to the worsening Covid situation. The Covid cases are rapidly increasing and there were multiple positive cases in many teams. It posed an imminent threat to the health and safety of players, officials and all others related to the running of the tournament.”
