Racing Driver of the Year: Verstappen adds another feather to his cap: Max Verstappen, the Red Bull driver ended the reign of Lewis Hamilton by snatching his maiden Formula 1 title after the dramatic Abu Dhabi finale, Follow InsideSport.IN for more Formula 1 News and Updates.

The Red Bull driver took 10 wins and 10 pole positions in his maiden F1 title last season. The readers of Autosport voted for Max Verstappen as the best racing driver of 2021. The other drivers in this list included Lewis Hamilton, IndyCar champion Alex Palou and Formula E winner, Nyck de Vries.

Max Verstappen’s victory was announced on 6th February at the Autosport Awards. The event was taken place at the Grosvenor House on Park Lane. It was a return to the live event as the 2020 event was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Racing Driver of the Year: World champion Max Verstappen named Autosport’s International Racing Driver of the Year

Max Verstappen said, “First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to all the fans who voted for me to win this award. All the support I got over the year was just amazing. I would like to thank Red Bull and Honda for giving me such a car to win my maiden Formula 1 title.”

It was Red Bull boss Christian Horner who took the award on behalf of Max Verstappen. The Team Principal added, “Max has developed and matured over the last few years. The way he drove last year was just outstanding. The way he went up against his arch-rival Lewis Hamilton, who was at the top of his game.”

Horner further added, “Max had led more laps than any driver on the grid and won more races. Max thoroughly deserved this award.”

The award started in 1982 and is open to professional racing drivers competing at the international level. Max Verstappen is the first Dutch driver who won this award.

The other Formula 1 drivers who have won this award include Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, and Sebastian Vettel. The British drivers on the honours list are Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jenson Button, and Lewis Hamilton.
