PVL 2022: Torpedos star Noah Taitano floored by Indian talent, says PVL is a great platform for Indian and foreign players
Speaking in a media interaction before the start of the Prime Volleyball League, Noah Taitano spoke in length on how he has to adapt his style to what is prevalent in India. Taitano is one of many American volleyball stars scouted and picked up by veteran David Lee, giving them an opportunity to shine and make a mark.
Taitano believes that the competition in India is on a different level, and he was visibly shocked by the amount of training and effort put in before games. He said, “PVL is a great platform, and not just for Indian volleyball players. It’s televised, the level of competition is high.”
On the differences in training, he added, “The style of play here includes more combinations. In the USA, it’s more head-on, you hit from wherever your position is. You don’t move around on the court so much as here.”
Taitano explained, “As far as training goes, in USA we start with basic drills and then move on to specific skills like blocking, then into gameplay. Here, we get into drills called Complex 1 and Complex 2. I’d never heard of those before!”

Taitano like most of the foreign recruits has made for himself in beach volleyball, where the style of play is completely different. Amid all the changes and challenges of living in a bio bubble and in a foreign country, Taitano will also have to alter his game to the best of his franchise Bengaluru Torpedos needs.
When asked what would be the major difference between Indoor and beach volleyball, Taitano said, “The biggest challenge would be timing the ball. I have been playing indoors for over four and a half years now so it’s not a huge challenge for me. For players who have been playing beach volleyball, the challenge would be timing the ball and getting used to the ball’s speed as well.”

Before the season began, Bengaluru focused on ensuring that the team had good camaraderie and focused more on team-building exercises. Taitano said that the helped him ease into the team having spent some time with his teammates before entering the court, helping them get on the same page quickly.
Among the current crop of players, Taitano was most impressed by Ranjit Singh, who will be leading the side. He said, “He’s (Ranjit) a great setter and a great leader, he has amazing hands. He’s is going to be the ‘piece’ that we need. It’s amazing to play with someone like him.”

He added, “All these players would thrive abroad. There is a player called Ganesh in our team, he jumps so high and hits the ball so hard, it’s incredible what he does given his lack of height.”
