In the same month, he last played professionally, Greenwood was arrested and faced charges of attempted rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, and engaging in coercive and controlling behavior, which were filed against him in October.

However, these charges were dropped recently, and the Crown Prosecution Service cited the withdrawal of crucial witnesses and the discovery of new evidence as the reasons for the dismissal.

 Latest on Mason Greenwood’s case

The Crown Prosecution Service stated that due to new developments, there was no longer a high probability of conviction.

After the decision was made, Greenwood released a statement expressing his relief, thanking his family, loved ones, and friends for their support, and adding that he would not be making any further comments on the matter.

Despite the dropped charges, Greenwood is still under investigation by the club to determine whether he should continue to be a part of Man Utd or not. The 21-year-old footballer has a contract with the club worth £70,000 per week until 2025, but he will not be able to return to play until the investigation concludes.

According to The Times, the squad is reportedly divided over whether or not Greenwood should return. It is said that the United manager, Erik ten Hag, has spoken to Greenwood to check on his well-being.

Manchester United on Mason Greenwood

Following the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United spokesperson stated that the club has taken note of the decision and will now undertake their internal process before deciding on the next steps.

The spokesperson added that no further comments will be made until the process is concluded. The academy graduate, who has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for the club, is presently training away from Carrington.

However, a leading sports lawyer has suggested that Greenwood may have missed out on potential earnings worth “millions” following the loss of sponsorship deals with major brands like Nike. In addition, a public relations expert cautioned that any team considering signing him, should he leave United, would be taking a significant financial risk.
