Portugal’s former coach Fernando Santos was sacked after the EURO 2016 champions were defeated in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarter-finals by Morroco with a margin of 0-1. The 68 years old Santos was criticized by football fans all over the world after he benched Al Nassr’s forward Cristiano Ronaldo in the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The rift between Portuguese skipper Ronaldo and Santos started after the former manager substituted the 37-year-old Ronaldo in the last group fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2022 against South Korea. Santos then dropped Ronaldo again from the starting lineup. Fernando Santos had a contract to remain as Portugal’s boss until the end of Euro 2024, but following a disappointing World Cup campaign he was removed.
