As we have all known about the recent heated controversy centred around the word “cracker”, fresh trouble could have surfaced for popular Twitch streamer Pokimane for the same. In one of her recent streams, she was almost made to spill out the word “cracker” during a donation from an audacious fan. Doing so would have led her into a lot of trouble. Recently, Hasan Piker, another well known Twitch streamer has faced a ban from the platform for using this offensive slur multiple times. “Cracker” seems to have violated the anti-racism regulations of Twitch and thus the word has been blacklisted by the platform.

The trap for Pokimane unfolded in quite an unpredictable manner. Similar to regular happenings on her stream, she received a shower of donations on her chat. She thanked all her subs and re-subs. Streamers usually read out their usernames to show appreciation and she did the same. Right at that moment, she noticed a username with a red flag, who was an anonymous user, to offer her one month  Tier 1 sub. But to her surprise, the username was itself the word “cracker”, which she was about to utter. Thanks to her professionalism or quick reflex, she nearly escapes the threat of a ban this time.

The slur has caused a lot of controversies on Twitch and debate continues to rage on in the community. Many support the action taken by Twitch while others are on the side of HasanAbi and like minders who feel it is just another word and is unfair on the part of Twitch to be so harsh. There were creators like Nmplol who explained why it was unjust to ban HasanAbi.

As the battle for right and wrong concerning a word continues there are many streamers who are holding themselves back from using the word or from taking any stance on this matter. Moreover, they seem to play safe and don’t want to get into another series of controversies by using the word, just like Pokimane did.
