Last year, Punjab Kings failed to qualify for the playoff finishing 6th on the points table. Mayank Agarwal was released by Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

Finding an Overseas All-rounder
Having released Odean Smith after just one season, Punjab Kings will look to upgrade him with an experienced campaigner. The team has retained Liam Livingstone and Rishi Dhawan for the next edition. However, they will look to further strengthen their all-rounder department for next season.

Opener to replace Mayank Agarwal
After releasing Mayank Agarwal, Punjab will be in need of an explosive opener to partner Shikhar Dhawan at the top. With uncertainty over Jonny Bairstow’s return to cricket following a freak injury, the franchisee would want to use the money to buy an established opener.
Replacement for Indian pacers
Another department that Punjab are looking to fill is the pace department. Having released Sandeep Sharma, Ishan Porel and Vaibhav Arora, the franchise is in need of a wicket-taking Indian bowler to fill the void left by these three players.

Players that Punjab Kings should target during IPL 2023 mini auction
Jason Holder
Teams will be eyeing to get the likes of Cameron Green, Sam Curran and Ben Stokes during the auction. With such an intense battle for the three players, Punjab can target Jason Holder during the auction. The West Indian all-rounder has plenty of IPL experience playing for teams like Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and most recently Lucknow Super Giants. With a player of his calibre, Punjab will have assurance with bat and ball.
Shivam Mavi
The pacer will be a perfect player to fill the void left by three Indian pacers. The 24-year-old previously played for KKR. Mavi can not only bowl with a new ball but can also be used as a death bowling specialist. Besides bowling he can also contribute with the bat and core runs at the end.
N Jagadeesan
Though Punjab would want to go for an experienced opener during the auction the former CSK man has earned attention due to his sizzling form in the domestic circuit. He was the highest run-scorer in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy and has started the Ranji Trophy season with a fine century. Jagadeesan has previously been part of the CSK set-up but was unable to get enough game time. Under Shikhar Dhawan, he has the chance to flourish as an opener. Even though this would be a huge gamble this one is worth risk-taking.
IPL Auction 2023 – Key details
- The auction is scheduled for December 23 in Kochi.
- The purse value of all teams has been increased by 5 crores, making a total of INR 95 crores for each team.
- Out of their total purse value, the franchises need to spend a minimum of 75% during the auction event.
- Earlier, from a list of 991 players, a total of 369 players from 10 teams were shortlisted. However, 36 additional players were added to the final list on request of the teams, making a total of 405 players to be presented at the IPL auction.
- Out of 405 players, 273 are Indian cricketers, and 132 are overseas, including four from associate nations.
- The total capped players are 119, uncapped players are 282 and 4 from associate nations.
- A maximum of 87 slots are now available, with up to 30 being allocated for overseas players.
- The auction will start at 14:30 IST.
