Novak Djokovic vs Karen Khachanov

Novak Djokovic avenged his 2018 championship match defeat to Karen Khachanov in style on Thursday at the Paris Masters, where the Serbian delivered a commanding performance for a 6-4, 6-1 third-round victory.

With the win, Djokovic extended his winning streak in tour-level matches to 11. It was also an 11th straight victory for the Serbian at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris, where he has not lost since he fell to Khachanov in the 2018 final.

“Khachanov is someone I know really well,” said Djokovic after the match. “We train [together] a lot, and we played almost 10 times against each other on different surfaces… He beat me four years ago in the final, so I know he likes this surface, he likes these conditions.

“The first [set] was quite even, I had my chances, he had a break, and he was hanging on and I broke his serve in the 10th game of the first set and I think after that the momentum shifted. In the second set I was a different player. I think I stepped it up even more, served better, and I’m just really pleased with the way I finished.”

Carlos Alcaraz vs Grigor Dimitrov

19-year old Carlos Alcaraz on Thursday won nine of the first 10 games en route to a 6-1, 6-3 third-round victory against Grigor Dimitrov. The Spamiard won the game in just 72 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in Paris, where he will take on seventh seed Andrey Rublev or Holger Rune.

The Spaniard dominated the contest right from the start as he took a 4-0 lead. breaking Dimitrov twice. Dimitrov managed to win only one service game in the remainder of the set as he won the first set 6-1. Alcartaz  started the second set too Alcaraz started off with a 3-0 lead. But Dimitrov made a comeback by winning the next three games, breaking Alcaraz once in the process to level the scores 3-3. He also had two break points with him in the mect game, but Alcaraz showcased his class as he saved the break points to hold his serve to take 4-3 lead.

From then on, Alcaraz continued his dominance as he won the next two games to defeat Dimitrov in straight games. “I started playing pretty well,” said Alcaraz after the match. “[Grigor’s] level is very much not the level you saw today, but I played very well. At the end of the second set, it was tougher for me, he came back, he raised the level and obviously it was tough. He had the chance to go up in the second set, I had to stay calm in that moment and show my best to not allow him to go up.”

Casper Ruud vs Lorenzo Musetti

Italian youngster Musetti downed third seed Ruud in three sets to reach his maiden Masters quarter-final. The 20-year-old, at a career-high ranking of 23rd, came from behind to beat the Norwegian Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Musetti will next face either reigning champion Novak Djokovic or Russian Karen Khachanov.

“He was playing really well and I had to play my best tennis to beat him,” said Musetti. “I am really happy that all the hard work I am doing keeps improving me. I am really proud of this win.”

Ruud has struggled since losing the US Open final to Alcaraz — having also been the French Open runner-up earlier this year —
winning just two of his last six matches. The 23-year-old took the opening set with a single break in the 10th game but then had no answer as his opponent battled back.

Musetti, who has lifted two ATP titles this year, broke serve three times across the next two sets to continue his rise with his
best performance to date at a Masters event.
