McLaren has been the kings of development in the 2023 Formula 1 season. Starting with the 9th fastest car, they now have the 2nd fastest car only behind Red Bull. At the Japanese GP, they once again showed their pace as both of their drivers finished on the podium behind the winner, Max Verstappen. Lando Norris showed great pace to be in 2nd place, while Oscar Piastri followed his teammate home for his podium.
Oscar Piastri’s Incredible Rookie Season
McLaren fought long and hard with Alpine to get a hold of Oscar Piastri last year. Given how the year is going, it’s safe to say both of the parties will be pleased with each other. He became the first rookie in 6 years after Lance Stroll to stand on the podium.
Oscar Piastri has come close to a podium on quite a few occasions, the closest being Silverstone. A late safety car caught him out on that track, but today none of that happened at the Japanese GP. He showed great pace on Saturday to outqualify his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. But he didn’t have enough race pace to keep him behind.
“It feels pretty special, definitely – I’ll remember it for a very, very long time,” he said.

Incredible Turnaround by McLaren
McLaren has put down a marker on the capabilities of in-season development in Formula 1, even under the cost cap. They have made huge gains over the 2023 season, and have flipped the script completely.
They have two amazing drivers in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri who can push each other. But, on their day, they can both take the fight to Max Verstappen if it’s possible.
After the Japanese GP, Lando Norris issued a warning, saying “We’re coming for Red Bull”. He also hailed the improvement made by McLaren. He said, “We’re pushing, we’re getting there. The progress we made is pretty outstanding.”
“Like I said, I’m pretty proud of the team. The steps forward we’re making every weekend. I’m sure there’s going to be some tough times to come, but we’re getting there step by step.”
