Sriram Balaji posts maiden win at French Open, Sumit Nagal & partner withdraw from doubles

After Sumit Nagal's withdrawal, Rohan Bopanna and Sriram Balaji are the only Indians alive at the French Open 2024.

It was a mixed day for the Indian players at the French Open 2024, as first Yuki Bhambri was ousted in the first round with his partner Albano Olivetti, and then N Sriram Balaji posted his first ever win at the Roland Garros. Balaji, along with his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varelas beat Reese Stalder and Sem Verbeek 6-3, 6-4.

Now the Balaji/Reyes-Varelas pair will be up against Theo Arribage and Dan Added of France in the second round.

But the day did not start on a bright day for Indian ace Yuki Bhambri. He, along with Olivetti, lost to John Peers and Roman Safiullin 3-6, 6-7 (5). On the other hand, Sumit Nagal, who had entered the men’s doubles draw, after losing in the first round of the singles category, withdrew from the match. In fact, his partner Austrian Sebastian Ofner forced the withdrawal.

Nagal was to play Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden in the first round, but the match was eventually cancelled. That could have been because Ofner played a five-setter against Corentin Moutet. And playing two matches in such short time, would have affected his chances. Now, Rohan Bopanna and Ebden will take on Brazil’s Orlando Luz and Marcelo Zormann on Saturday.
