Olympics 2024: Why are Paris locals threatening to poop in the Seine River?

The Olympic triathlon event in Paris will be conducted between July 30 and 31.

Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Parisians are threatening to poop in the River Seine as a mark of protest against the poor quality of water in the river. The protest was aimed at criticizing the French government’s overspending on river cleanup efforts as the Paris Olympic 2024 closes in on the French capital.

Protestors, frustrated by the government’s Euro1.5 billion expenditure to clean the Seine, had planned to defecate in the river as a form of protest.

Rallying under the hashtag #JeChieDansLaSeineLe23Juin, which means “I sh-t in the Seine on June 23. The protestors wanted to coincide their demonstration with a planned swim by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Earlier, both officials had pledged to swim in the river on this date to demonstrate its cleanliness in preparation for the Olympic 2024 Games.

The swim has been delayed

However, the swim was postponed after Paris region official Marc Guillaume announced at a press conference that the Seine is still too polluted. A recent report revealed that the river’s water samples showed high levels of fecal bacteria failing to meet the required standards for the upcoming Paris Olympic events.

The Olympic triathlon event in Paris will be conducted between July 30 and 31. Athletes will swim 1.5 km in the Seine River. Apart from the swim they will cycle 40 km past landmarks like the Grand Palais, and finish with a 10 km run through central Paris.
