India’s one of the biggest hopes for the Paris Olympics 2024, boxer Lovlina Borgohain has been handed a shock defeat by a Refugee Boxing Team member, Cindy Ngamba, at the Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem in the Czech Republic on Thursday. The competition being held under World Boxing, saw Lovlina, the Tokyo 2024 bronze medalist go down to her unknown rival.
Lovlina Borgohain 0 – 5 Cindy Ngamba
Participating in the 75 kg category, Lovlina Borgohain looked rusty and lost 0-5 to Cindy Ngamba, in a unanimous decision in her second bout. Meanwhile, Ngamba had also qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The defeat does not mean end of the campaign for the 26-year-old Indian though. The competition is being held in the round robin format, so she has matches left.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Cindy Ngamba has beaten Lovlina. Back in the 2022 Women’s World Boxing Championships, the Cameroonian boxer had gotten the better of the Indian 1-4.

Now Lovlina will be up against Li Qian of China in her next bout. The Chinese is a two-time Olympic medalist and a three-time World Championships winner. In fact, Li Qian had beaten Lovlina Borgohain in the final of the Asian Games 2023 as well.
Paris Olympics 2024 Preparation Hampered
This loss is a major setback for the World No. 4, who is a vital prospect for Indian in 2024 Paris Olympics. Even her first win against Chantal Reid, came in a split decision. With some very strong names present in the women’s 75 kg category at the Olympics 2024, it seems like a possibility, that Lovlina does not get a medal for the country.
