HS Prannoy loses steam before Paris 2024 Olympics, ousted from first round, sixth time this year

Indonesia Open: HS Prannoy is suffering from a slip of form just before the Paris 2024 Olympics, and things look bleak for him at the moment.

The Indian badminton team for Paris 2024 Olympics is set, and veteran HS Prannoy is all set to lead the men’s singles section. The World No. 10 had an exceptional 2023 season, where he also beat the best in business, Viktor Axelsen, to claim the bronze medal, and his performances made sure, he had no issues in securing his berth.

But come 2024, Prannoy seems to have hit a roadblock, as far as his form is concerned, and this is bad news for India, that is still looking for its first ever men’s singles badminton medal at the Olympics. On Tuesday, he was once again ousted in the first round of the Indonesia Open, this time by compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat 21-17, 21-12.

HS Prannoy Form Guide 2023

Last year, HS Prannoy made a solid comeback to the circuit, with a Malaysia Masters win. Enroute his victory, he beat the likes of Chou Tien Chen, Li Shi Feng, Kenta Nishimoto, and Weng Hong Yang. The he also managed to reach the semis of the Indonesia Open, followed by a finals appearance at the Australian Open. He ended 2023 with a quarters berth in the China Open.

Prannoy’s Dismal Form Before Paris 2024

This year, the Olympics year, HS Prannoy has just managed to reach the semis of a tournament only once — India Open in January. He beat Chou Tien Chen, and Priyanshu Rajawat in the tournament. but apart from that it has been poor showing from the 31-year-old. He has been eliminated from the first rounds at the Malaysia Open, Indonesia Masters, French Open, All England, Thailand Open, and now the Indonesia Open.

This has now come up as a major cause of worry, since Lakshya Sen, the other Paris-bound Indian, isn’t in great form either. With Paris Olympics just a month away, there’s only little that can be expected, if there isn’t a sudden improvement in his form.
