As Indian athletes gear up for the upcoming Paris Olympics, here are the athletes who were hits at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. 

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics marked the most successful campaign for India in Olympic history. The Indian contingent won seven medals, including a gold by Neeraj Chopra. Among the medalists were seasoned athletes as well as emerging talents.

Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra name to the fame came from one throw which turned his life from upside down. Neeraj ended the drought of India by winning the gold in Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He became the second athelete to win a gold in Olympics after Abhinav Bindra. Neeraj Chopra threw 87.58m to clinch the gold medal.

Mirabai Chanu

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won her first Olympic medal in the women’s 49kg division, opening India’s medal account at the Tokyo 2020 Games.This was the second Olympic medal for weightlifting for India, following Karnam Malleswari’s bronze in Sydney 2000.

PV Shindu

After winning silver in the Rio 2016 Olympics, India’s star shutter PV Sindhu clinched bronze in the Tokyo Olympics. She was the first women athelete to win two medals in the Olympics. Sindhu defeated China’s He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15 in the women’s singles.

Lovlina Borgohain

Lovlina Borgohain, making her Games debut, lost to top-seeded Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the semi-finals of the women’s 69kg competition, although she went on to win a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020.

To guarantee herself a medal, Lovlina Borgohain defeated Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya

Ravi Kumar Dahiya was playing his first Olympics in 2020 when he claimed his first medal. He had beat Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals to win silver medal.

Bajrang Punia

Bajrang Punia was the third Indian to win a medal in his debut appreance in Olympics in 2020. He had defeated a World Championships silver-madallist Daulet Niyazbekov to claim bronze medal.

Indian hockey team

India had a rich history of hockey in the Olympics, however India lost their dominance in time. After a 41-year gap, the Indian men’s hockey team secured their first Olympic medal since winning gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Despite trailing 3-1 at one stage, India staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Germany 5-4 and clinch the bronze medal.
