Big blow to Indian javelin team for Paris 2024 Olympics, hopeful DP Manu suspended for doping

DP Manu would have been the third Indian javelin thrower to qualify for Paris Olympics 2024, had he been not banned by NADA.

In a big blow to India’s chances at the Paris Olympics 2024, javelin thrower DP Manu has been provisionally suspended by the NADA, after he tested positive for a banned substance. Manu tested positive during the Indian Grand Prix in April, as per PTI. Always seen as the one to qualify for the Olympics, after Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena, Manu was asked to stay away from AFI competitions by the NADA.

DP Manu in Trouble

Manu is ranked 15th in the Race to Paris rankings currently, and was almost certain to make the Paris Olympics 2024 cut. But due to his doping ban, India won’t be able to field three throwers in the Olympics 2024. In fact, the development is so sudden, that he was even in the entry list for the National Inter-State Championships which began on Thursday in Panchkula. But later, NADA asked his name to be dropped.

AFI President Adille Sumariwalla shed light on the entire episode. “There could be something like that, but we still don’t know what is the actual thing. There was a phone call to AFI office (from the NADA) yesterday that he (Manu) be stopped from competitions,” Sumariwalla said.

“Otherwise there are no details (on what kind of possible violation). I think the athlete himself (DP Manu) is finding out from the NADA what is the exact thing.”

Manu at Paris Olympics 2024 Would be Missed

DP Manu is one of the brightest javelin throwers in the country, and has a personal best of 84.35m. Last year, he had won a silver medal in the Asian Athletics Championships, and had even finished sixth in the 2023 World Championships, with a best throw of 84.14m. Recently, at the Federations Cup, he finished second behind Neeraj Chopra, with a best throw of 82.06m.
