Anshu Malik’s shoulder issue at training raises concerns ahead of Paris Olympics

India’s wrestling star and medal hope for the upcoming Paris Olympics Anshu Malik suffered a setback during the training. Anshu complained about having discomfort in the shoulder, prompting the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to seek additional information regarding her condition.  The 22-year-old recently won a silver medal at the Budapest Ranking Series Event.

Anshu Malik suffers injury scare ahead of Paris Olympics

Anshu earned her ticket to Paris, by winning a gold at the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan earlier this year. After her accomplishment in Budapest, she returned to her training base at Mirchpur Academy in Haryana, where she felt soreness in her left shoulder during a practice session. 

Her father and coach, Dharamveer Malik, reassured her that the injury was being monitored cautiously, and Anshu had an MRI scan, which found no severe issues. “She stopped training as a precautionary measure but has since resumed light training sessions,” Dharamveer Malik told PTI.

WFI President Sanjay Singh expressed concern and requested an update on Anshu’s fitness. “We have requested a detailed status report and expect to receive confirmation on her condition within the next two days,” Singh told PTI.  

India’s head coach Virender Dahiya believes the wrestling squad is focused and well-prepared for the Olympic games. 

Indian wrestlers’ prospective of medals in Paris

India is set to field six wrestlers at the Games, with high hopes for Anshu Malik’s success alongside seasoned athletes such as Vinesh Phogat. The National Sports Federations (NSFs) have till July 8 to complete their nominations, with India aiming for numerous medals in wrestling this Olympic season.
