The native of Brazil took on one of the sport’s toughest fighters in Dustin Poirier and defeated him in a wild bout at the main event of UFC 269 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The time of the stoppage was 1:02 of the third round as Oliveira (32-8) submitted Poirier (28-7) with a standing rear-naked choke, adding to his UFC submission record with his 14th.

The first round was a breathtaking affair, as Poirier landed the heaviest shots. But Olivera landed repeatedly both front kicks and knees to the torso. The effects of those kicks took hold in the second, as Oliveira tripped Poirier and ended up in top position, where he rained down heavy elbows over the course of several minutes.

Oliveira wasted little time sinking in the winning choke in the third to seal his 10th consecutive win.

“I’m a world champion, I’m the man. They talk and I do,” Oliveira said as quoted by CBS Sports. “They can hit me a lot but I am going to walk forward.”

Pena stuns Nunes to claim UFC bantamweight crown

Julianna Pena pulled off one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history to score a second-round submission win over Amanda Nunes and win the UFC bantamweight title at UFC 269 on Saturday.

In the main event, Charles Oliveira retained the lightweight title, submitting Dustin Poirier with a standing choke early in the third round of a thrilling battle.

Coming into the fight a heavy betting favourite Nunes, whose record includes wins over Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko and Cris Cyborg, wilted as Pena poured on flurries of punches as the two stood and traded blows before the fight went to the mat.

Nunes’ five-year reign at the top came to an end when she tapped out at the 3:23 mark of the second round as Pena sank in a rear naked choke to hand the Brazilian her first defeat since September 2014.

“I told you, don’t ever doubt me again. Willpower, strength and determination will take you places,” Pena said in a post-fight interview in the cage. “You literally have the ability to do anything you want in this life, and I just proved that tonight.”

However, Oliveira got Poirier on his back in the middle of the cage early in the second, landing thunderous elbows before jumping on Poirier’s back and securing the choke early in the third round.

UFC 269 LIVE StreamingOliveira vs Poirier LIVE: Who will have the edge?

Charles Oliveira: Ten years, nine months, 15 days and 27 fights after making his promotional debut, Oliveira claimed the vacant lightweight title with a second-round stoppage win over Michael Chandler at UFC 262 in May. The victory extended the 32-year-old Brazilian’s winning streak to nine, while also giving Oliveira the record for the most finishes in UFC history with 17; he now has 19 UFC victories.

Dustin Poirier: Poirier punched his ticket to a second lightweight title fight with a pair of victories over Conor McGregor, stopping the Irish superstar at UFC 267 in January to draw level in their personal series and winning the best-of-three affair with a second consecutive stoppage victory in July at UFC 264. Like Oliveira, “The Diamond” has been plying his trade inside the Octagon for quite some time, with his most recent win over McGregor standing as his 20th UFC victory
