Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: On an evening of heart-to-heart with the former Manchester United beloved player and manager, Ole Gunner Solskjaer ripped into the current squad. He travelled down memory lane to talk about the days with Roy Keane, Gary Neville, and more. He talked about the mentality of Man United players today and how they would’ve crumbled if they were in the dressing room during the era of Sir Alex Ferguson. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been loved by Manchester United fans both as a player and a manager. He was sacked from his job as a manager at the club back in November, 2021. He has not been involved in any other clubs since then. As he recently came back to the city, he attended a talk show where he reminisced about his old days at the club and talked about his views. He visited Roy Keane’s home in the morning to catch up and have a cup of tea with his old teammate.
Solskjaer was part of the Manchester United squad under Sir Alex Ferguson that used to win the Premier League title like it was nothing. Reminiscing those days gone by, he said, “The lads in that dressing room were absolutely fantastic. Keano [Roy Keane] was the leader, the one everyone looked up to. David May was the joker, the clown. Gary [Neville] is still the busiest and was the busiest back then as well. Nicky [Butt] and Giggsy [Ryan Giggs] were the entertainers.”
He expressed that he has been impressed by what Erik Ten Hag has done, but he has not been impressed by the current squad and their mentality. He added, “It was just a fantastic dressing room. Winners, who hated losing. They had a few fights, like you should do, after bad games. You had to shake each other up. If you do that to the boys now, they will get their dad, or their mum, or their agents… snowflakes. Not many of today’s lot would have survived in that dressing room.”
Solskjaer arrived to manage a battered Man United back in 2018. He had the huge responsibility of filling Sir Alex’s shoes being one of his star pupils back in the day. Even though he had not completely succeeded in pulling Man United back to the top, he had succeeded in improving the team. About his time as the manager, he said “I feel very, very privileged and honoured to have been the manager. But there was probably never a worse time to be the manager of Manchester United.”
At the end of his tenure, Solskjaer had lost 7 out of the 13 games he managed. However, many blame the dressing room revolt at that time for his downfall. Many rumours spread that his favouritism of captain Harry Maguire lost him the faith of the dressing room.
Solskjaer has received several offers from different clubs, including Ineos-owned French club Nice which he confirmed during the talk show. However, he has rejected all offers and remains living away from the football world. He still expressed his wish to come back to Old Trafford in a managerial position in future. He will be in attendance for Manchester United’s match against Wolves this weekend.
