‘Believe’: Netherlands in WC, dressing room message goes viral

The Dutch side has sealed their spot in the ICC World Cup 2023 after beating Scotland by 4 wickets. They became the 10th and final to qualify for the World Cup

‘Believe’. The Dutch brigade had a simple message for all teammates in the dressing room. Scotland were the favourites to seal the deal after Zimbabwe fell. But the Netherlands preached what they ‘believed’. With a 4-wicket victory over Scotland, Netherlands confirmed the last slot in the ICC World Cup 2023 in India in October-November. After their triumph, their dressing room message went viral on social media.

The Orange Brigade qualified for the big event after a long span of 12 years. Interestingly, the last time they made it to the ODI World Cup, was back in 2011 when the tournament was hosted by India and the hosts won it.

Bas de Leede’s five-for and a blistering 123 off 92 deliveries have ensured Netherlands book their place in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup in India later this year. De Leede played a crucial role in beating Scotland by 4 wickets.

Earlier, Scotland had amassed 277 for nine thanks to Brandon McMullen’s 106 off 110 balls and also assisted by Richie Berrington who scored 64 off 84 deliveries. Bas de Leede was the ‘destructor in-chief’ as he scalped five wickets for 52 runs.

In reply, De Leede’s 123 included 7 fours and 5 maximums as the Netherlands booked their ticket to India at the expense of Scotland.

After ODIs, Sanju Samson gets lucky break in T20Is too

“We had a look at the targets, where we wanted to be at the halfway point. Maxy and Vikram set the platform for the rest of us to finish it well. The rate was 10-11 RPO, so we had to go to the T20 mode, try as many runs as we could and see where it would take us. It’s amazing, can’t describe the feeling, it’s going to be one big party tonight (on qualifying for the 2023 WC)” said Bas de Leede after the match.

Bas de Leede became only the fourth player in men’s ODI history to pick up a five-for and score a century in the same match. The Netherlands join Sri Lanka to become the last of the two teams to qualify for the mega tournament from the Super Sixes.
