It seems like well-known people from USA are now interested in European football. It started with Ryan Reynolds investing in Wrexham and now that trend is spreading. Now, NBA legend Steve Kerr has also joined the bandwagon. Nine-time NBA champion Steve Kerr has become an investor in La Liga team RCD Mallorca. Last month, Mallorca reorganised its ownership, with president Andy Kohlberg taking the lead role after purchasing Robert Sarver’s shares, the previous owner of the Phoenix Suns.
Steve Kerr joins RCD Mallorca as a shareholder
With fellow American and tennis great Andy Kohlberg entering as president and major stakeholder, Kerr will try to better assist in guiding the ship of the La Liga team. They will try following in the footsteps of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Steve Kerr won five NBA championships as a player and is seen as one of the greatest coaches in NBA history. He won four championships with the Warriors between 2015 and 2022.
Talking about the move, Steve Kerr said, ”I’m a friend of Andy Kohlberg and we were talking this summer. He told me about the change in ownership, and offered me the chance to be part of the new investment group. I’m really looking forward to it, I was in Mallorca last summer to watch a match, supporting the team and becoming a fan. It’s a very exciting opportunity.’
Steve Kerr ended by saying, ‘He told me it was an excuse to spend a week or two in August every summer in Mallorca. That was the main motivation, I think!’
Los Bermellones were only promoted from La Liga 2 two years ago. They will be looking for more success after placing ninth in La Liga last season. With just two games played, they are now 14th in the Spanish first division. In their first 2 games, they have drawn 1-1 at Las Palmas on opening weekend and lost 1-0 to Villarreal on Friday.
Kerr’s speech to RCD Mallorca in 2022
In 2022, Steve Kerr visited the island of Mallorca and delivered a speech to the first team squad. He said, ‘Becoming a Mallorca fan last year and becoming involved now with the team, I’m going to be watching La Liga games all year.’
He continued, ‘It’s so exciting to not only have a financial stake but really what that means, putting your heart into it and becoming part of the team.’
