National Boxing Championships: Shiva Thapa & Amit Panghal advance to quarterfinal

Shiva Thapa, competes in 63.5kg. Amit Panghal, the 2019 World Championships silver medalist is in 51kg at the National Boxing Championships

India’s Shiva Thapa and Amit Panghal advanced into the quarterfinal of the Men’s National Boxing Championships on Wednesday. Both the men are eyeing the national title at the 7th edition of the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships being held in Shillong.

Shiva Thapa, a six-time Asian Championships medalist, competes in the 63.5kg. He defeated Santhosh HK from Karnataka with a flawless score of 5-0 to enter the quarterfinal. Thapa won the gold medal in the last edition. He will next face Shashank Pradhan of Delhi in the quarterfinals.

Amit Panghal meanwhile is the 2019 World Championships silver medalist in 51kg. Representing Services, he faced Punjab’s Jayshandeep Singh in the round of 16. Amit won the contest with a scoreline of 4-1. He will next face Mohammad Aarif of Jammu and Kashmir in the quarterfinals.

Apart from the duo 2021 Asian Champion Sanjeet also made it to the quarterfinal. He clinched a dominant 5-0 win against Sawan Gill of Chandigarh. Sanjeet too represents Services. He will next face Naman Tanwar of Railways in the quarterfinals.

Ashish Kumar from Himachal Pradesh defeated Chandigarh’s Nitish Kumar via knockout in the first round of the contest. The Tokyo Olympian is now set to face Lakshya of Services in the quarterfinals.
