Australia Cricket Team will be without Nathan Lyon for the remaining three Ashes 2023 Tests. On the cusp of 500 Test wickets, Lyon suffered a calf strain in the Lord’s Test. While he did come out to bat in the 2nd innings, the veteran did not bowl. Australia Test captain Pat Cummins and the team management confirmed that he will miss out. Todd Murphy will take his place.
“I wasn’t particularly happy but he was pretty keen to get out there. He did an amazing job. I would imagine he is (out of the series),” Pat Cummins confirmed after the Lord’s Test.

On day two of the second Ashes test at Lord’s on Thursday, Lyon was hurt while attempting to collect a fly ball in the field. He stood and seized his calf. To slowly hobble back to the pavilion, he needed assistance. On Saturday as well, he continued playing despite appearing to be in excruciating pain as he hobbled across the pitch to finish a single. Lyon eventually received a standing ovation from the Australian team and the fans after being dismissed for 4 runs.
“I’ve been having conversations since it happened with our medical team. I knew the risks. But I’ll do anything for this team.,” Lyon had told reporters at stumps on Saturday
Lyon naturally did not bowl on Sunday as Australia claimed a win by 43 runs at Lord’s to go 2-0 up in the series. Pat Cummins’ side are chasing their first Ashes win in England since 2001, but Lyon is unlikely to play a further part on the tour. In his absence, the visitors are likely to bank on Todd Murphy. Murphy made his debut in India earlier this year and was impressive against Virat Kohli and Co with 14 wickets.
