Narendra Modi Stadium

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is the world’s largest cricket stadium with a capacity of 132,000. Owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association, it hosts both domestic and international matches. The stadium replaced the old Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, which was demolished in 2015. The new stadium, originally named Motera Stadium, was designed by Australia’s Populous and built by Larsen and Toubro at a cost of ₹800 crore. It took five years to complete and features four dressing rooms, 11 centre pitches, and two practice grounds, which can also be used for domestic matches.

The stadium opened in 2020 during the Namaste Trump event, and in 2021, it was renamed Narendra Modi Stadium to honour India’s Prime Minister. The inauguration ceremony in February 2021 was attended by President Ram Nath Kovind. The stadium hosted its first Test match on 24 February 2021 when India played against England, marking its debut as a day-night Test venue. Additionally, on 29 September 2022, it hosted the opening ceremony of the 2022 National Games of India. The stadium has since become one of the premier venues in world cricket.
