The Japanese former world number one looked all business as she raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set but a first hold of serve invigorated Osorio, who then started chasing down everything Osaka threw at her.
Osaka needed to save two break points to hold serve for the first set and faced two more in the second stanza before overpowering the inexperienced world number 50 with her aggressive shots from the baseline.
“It always feels special to come back here,” said the 13th seed, who will next face Dayana Yastremska or Madison Brengle as she seeks her third Melbourne Park title.
“I thought she played amazing. Overall I’m just happy to be here, I’m happy to see everybody in the audience and I hope we gave you a great performance.”

Naomi Osaka beat Camila Osario LIVE: Defending champion Osaka beats Osario in straight sets, Sakkari through to Round 2
Osaka who had a stellar run in the Australian Open last year by dropping the set only once, however had a rather forgettable 2021. She pulled out of the French Open last year after being fined by the tournament officials as she refused to participate in press conferences citing mental health issues. She also missed the Wimbledon and was knocked out in the third round of the US Open.
The 24-year old will now look to start the season afresh. She enters the Australian Open after reaching the quarter-final of the Melbourne Set 1. She however had to pull out of the tournament after suffering an abdominal injury. However it looks like she has regained her fitness and she would be rearing to go in the opening round of the Australian Open.
Her opponent is the 20-year old Osario, who won her maiden ATP title last year at Copa Colanirtas. She had her best season in the Grand Slams last year where she went till the third round in the Wimbledon. She will be making her debut in the main draw of the Australian Open when she faces the defending champion.
