Lallianzuala Chhangte produced the first instance of quality after a tense opening in which neither side was able to maintain possession for extended periods. He sped past a few defenders and swapped passes with Apuia before sending his effort high from close range.
A few minutes later, Chhangte was back in the action, playing a pin-point cross to Bipin Singh, whose goal-bound header was blocked by Nikhil Poojary. Despite their being sufficient grounds for the Hyderabad right-back to have received a red card, the referee chose a moderate stance and only issued him a yellow card.
Just before halftime, Sanjeev Stalin knocked down Rohit Danu as the latter went through on goal, raising additional concerns about the refereeing. Referee Harish Kundu had his red card out, but following complaints from the Mumbai players, he changed his mind and only gave Stalin a yellow card after consulting with his assistant.

With Halicharan Narzary on the field early in the second half, Hyderabad was able to make more excursions into the Mumbai half. In the 65th minute, Hitesh Sharma broke through on goal and beat Phurba Lachenpa at his near post to give them the equaliser.
After that, Hyderabad’s assault was all but nonexistent, and Mumbai made an effort to seize the initiative by inserting Greg Stewart for the final 15 minutes. The Scot nearly scored the winning goal for the home team with a beautiful take and spin in the box, but Gurmeet brilliantly blocked his shot to give Hyderabad a point.
Des Buckingham’s team now has 43 points after 17 games, while Hyderabad has 36 after 16 games. Hyderabad will now look to FC Goa and Bengaluru FC to give them favours by defeating Mumbai, while Mumbai will need two more victories to guarantee themselves the shield.
