By winning the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion, Virat Kohli become the only fourth captain to register 40 wins or more in Tests.

Graeme Smith (53), Ricky Ponting (48) and Steve Waugh (41) are the only captains with more test wins then Kohli.

As the table suggests Kohli finished his captaincy career at No. 4 in the most succesful test captains list.

He is 33 and has 5 years of good test cricket left in him. But his unexpected resignation has stalled his chances to become WORLD’S MOST SUCSSESFUL TEST CAPTAIN.

In comparison Waugh retired at the age of 38 & Ponting’s last victory as test captain also came almost at the same age of 37.

Albeit the most succesful test captain of all times Graeme Smith retired at the age of 33 but by that time he had alread led South Africa for 11 long years & 109 test matches.

As India secured the victory, Virat Kohli’s side reached a remarkable feat in Test cricket. The Indian team – only for the second time in its history – won four overseas Tests in a calendar year.

Virat Kohli as Test Captain: Records and Milestones Virat Kohli achieved by Virat Kohli:

Four overseas Test victories in a calendar year: Kohli is the only Indian captain to achieve the feat twice. Incidentally, it was under Kohli’s captaincy when India achieved the feat for the first time as well.

India won Tests in Brisbane, Lord’s, Oval, and Centurion this year, equalling the feat in 2018 when India began their away win campaign in Johannesburg, Nottingham, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

First Asian to Win at Centuion: Kohli has become the third captain and the first Asian to register a Test win at Centurion the first two being England’s Nasser Hussain in 2000 and Australia’s Michael Clarke in 2014.

Most Test Wins by Asian Captain in SENA Countries: This win is the seventh under Kohli in 23 Tests (Lost 13 and drawn 3) the most by an Asian Captain in SENA countries.
In overseas Tests, Kohli has won 16 out of 36 Tests

Only Indian to conquer Centurion: Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to lead India to a win in Centurion, while they had previously won games in South Africa, a win in Centurion had eluded the Men in Blue so far. For the record, South Africa have won a staggering 21 out of 27 matches played at Centurion. 

Only Asian skipper to win two Boxing Day fixtures:With the victory against South Africa, Virat became only the first Asian cricketer to lead his team to two wins in Boxing Day Test matches. Earlier, India had conquered Australia, Down Under in 2018, in a series that the visitors won by 2-1. 

First Indian skipper to win two Test matches in South Africa: The 33-year-old has led India to two Test match victories against South Africa, he’s the only Indian captain to achieve this feat. Previously, India won a Test match in the rainbow nation under Kohli’s captaincy back in 2018. India now needs just one more win, to win a maiden Test series on South African soil.
