Anwar Ali and Brandon Hamill performed admirably in defence, making important interceptions and maintaining a clean sheet. Melroy Alissi’s own goal let the Mariners take the lead in the 24th minute.

Hugo Boumous doubled the advantage and clinched the deal in the 48th minute. Vishal Kaith produced a superb stop to deny Punjab captain Luka Majcen a certain goal. Punjab attempted to hold at least one back till the final whistle blew, but were unsuccessful.

It wasn’t the most fluid of performances, given to the conditions after the rain. However, MBSG does its work ahead of Saturday’s much-anticipated Kolkata derby versus East Bengal.

Punjab FC performed admirably in patches, with Brandon in particular finding space. Although, Juan Mera’s strike against the crossbar was the team’s only serious chance. On Thursday, Punjab will meet the Bangladesh Army at the VYBK.
