Thapa was on the verge of joining Mohun Bagan Super Giants a year ago but instead chose to sign a three-year contract with Chennaiyin FC. Despite having only one year left on his contract, Mohun Bagan’s head coach, Juan Fernando, has successfully achieved his key goal. Mohun Bagan had to contend with their traditional transfer window rivals, Mumbai City FC.

Chennaiyin FC received a transfer fee of 3 crores for their captain and prized possession. The 25-year-old will also gain some additional benefits by joining the historical club and relocating to Kolkata.
