India’s star pacer, Mohammed Shami, played a pivotal role in his India’s impressive 302-run win over Sri Lanka in the 33rd match of the World Cup 2023 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium by taking five wickets. However, what drew widespread attention was Shami’s choice to seemingly refrain from performing ‘Sajda’ (a Muslim prostration) right after achieving his five-wicket haul. Coming to the match, India, led by Mohammed Shami, had an extraordinary night on Thursday, becoming the first team to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup with a dominant 302-run victory over Sri Lanka. This win marked India’s seventh consecutive triumph in the 2023 World Cup, maintaining their unbeaten streak.

Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, chose to ball, and in response, Rohit Sharma & Co posted a formidable total of 357/8. Shubman Gill was the top scorer for India with 92 runs, while Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer contributed 88 and 82 runs, respectively. Dilshan Madushanka claimed five wickets for Sri Lanka, giving away 80 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah made an early breakthrough by dismissing Pathum Nissanka with the first delivery, and Mohammed Siraj quickly took three more wickets, reducing Sri Lanka to 4/3. Mohammed Shami then took five wickets, and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with another, resulting in Sri Lanka being bowled out for just 55 runs in 19.4 overs.
