Dietitian explains how UFC fighters cut 10 Kgs in 6 days

Jordan Sullivan, an Australian nutritionist and dietitian, shared a video on Instagram which explained how Israel Adesanya cuts 10 kg or 22 lbs. in less than a week to make weight for the fight. Sullivan posted a series of photos of different foods which fighters consume to lose weight.

The Australian nutritionist then explained that the fighters do not lose any body weight at all. In fact, they lose the water weight in their body. They do so by cutting out carbohydrates and salts since these have high amounts of water and retain water in the body, thus increasing the weight on the scales.

Thus, the Australian showed foods like an omelet, Bacon, chicken, some more bacon and eggs, some more chicken, watermelon, and even ice cream. However, the caption explained the whole procedure in detail.

Sullivan confirmed that this kind of weight cut is not permanent and fighters are able to rehydrate within 24-48 hours. Moreover, he also said that you should not attempt such a weight cut since it is only for professionals. If you are looking to reduce your weight, a long-term plan to stick to a calorie deficit is definitely the better approach.

So there you have it. UFC fighters cut weight by reducing all the foods that retain water and restricting their water intake. While this may sound like it’s not a lot, it is definitely the case. That’s why UFC fighters also utilize saunas so often.

What do you make of the UFC weight-cut debate? Do you think they should restrict the weight cuts to ensure fighters’ safety?
