Dustin Poirier Monicker: How did he become ‘The Diamond’?

The nickname ‘The Diamond’ or ‘El Diamante’ comes from Poirier’s fighting style and his journey in the sport. As we all know, diamonds from under high pressure and can handle incredible amounts of pressure without breaking. Moreover, despite all that, they still shine bright.

Poirier sees the similarities between himself and diamonds for this reason. He earned the nickname because of his ability to absorb incredible strikes and then come out on top. Very often Poirier finds himself under pressure in fights. Despite this, he can fight through it and get the better of his opponent.

We have seen several instances of this during his career. While it started at a very young age when he was a teenager getting into fights, we can see it till today. In his first fight against Gaethje, Poirier absorbed immense pressure to win. Same with his bout against Michael Chandler, Dan Hooker, and others.

Therefore, it is fair to say that Poirier has earned his nickname ‘The Diamond.’ The American will hope to live up to it again on July 29 when he faces the hard-hitting Justin Gaethje yet again.
