The heavyweight division is going through a transition phase. Jon Jones is the champion and can dominate the division. However, he is not getting any younger. His challenger, Stipe Miocic, last fought over two years ago but is still challenging for the title. Therefore, the division finds itself in an uncertain place. However, the future is bright with many challengers including Tom Aspinall.

Tom Aspinall explains why Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic should retire after UFC 295

Aspinall recently caught up with Dannis Kornman and Eurosport to talk about the division and the UFC 295 card ahead of his bout against Serghei Pavlovich. And about the fight, Aspinall said, “I think Jones is going to win, but I won’t be surprised if Stipe won as well. The guy is amazing.”

However, Aspinall then made a surprising statement saying the bigger question is who retires and when they retire. He explained that neither fight is getting any younger. And if they choose to hold the belt for a while and then retire without defending it again, it would be holding up the division.

Instead, the Englishman gave his ideal situation. He said, “In an ideal world, what would happen would be both guys retire on November 11th, and then me and Pavlovich compete for the vacant title. That’s the ideal situation.”

The Englishman also took aim at fellow heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane and said he would not reject fights like the frenchman.

While Aspinall’s comments make sense, it is highly unlikely. If Miocic wins, then we could see a situation where he holds up the division. However, if Jones wins, he will probably defend the belt and will be willing to defend it often enough.

Therefore, while it would be the best-case scenario for Aspinall and Pavlovich, we can’t see it happening. What do you make of the comments from Tom Aspinall? Do you see it happening?
