Five years ago to this day, the UFC witnessed the biggest event in its history. Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov competed in a blockbuster fight at UFC 229. This was the biggest fight in terms of viewership numbers, money, drama, and every other sense. And now, five years on, “The Eagle” reminisced about the fight.

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov shared one of the fiercest rivalries in the UFC. With the things said before the fight, and the actions after the fight from Khabib, it is undoubtedly one of the most infamous rivalries in the UFC. However, in the end, Nurmagomedov had the last laugh as he submitted the Irishman, who promised to knock him out.
Khabib Nurmagomedov taunts Conor McGregor about UFC 229
Nurmagomedov took to social media to remember the fight five years ago. He shared some photos from the fight on his Instagram story and took a few sly digs at the Irishman. This included Nurmagomedov trolling McGregor’s striking and proving that he was the better striker.
Nurmagomedov also posted a picture of the ground and pound and said that was when he wanted to talk, but McGregor didn’t. Something similar to what he said during the fight. The Russian then posted a picture of the choke that finished McGregor and said, “That was the end.”
While Nurmagomedov is reminiscing about his win, the whole promotion won that day. The UFC sold over 2.4 million PPVs for that fight. Moreover, the arena had over 20,000 fans and the gate surpassed $17 million. Since then, the UFC has put on many big events. However, none of them have come close to figures like this.
And while Nurmagomedov remembered his historic win, McGregor, unsurprisingly, has made no comment thus far. The ‘Notorious’ is busy preparing for his return to action next year. However, with this post from the Russian, we can expect the Irishman to retort.
Five years on from McGregor vs Nurmagomedov, what did you make of that rivalry? Do you think we will ever see another rivalry like that in the UFC?
