Miami GP 2024: No night race, fewer static shocks, more rubber on-track

After two successful races in 2022 and 2023, Miami GP organizers are looking for places to improve. Let’s see what they have lined up.

The Miami GP has turned out to be a commercially successful addition to Formula 1. The teams and fans had a lot of fun. There is an increased demand for tickets next year. However, the organizers are not resting on their laurels. With Max Verstappen and Red Bull having won both years, they’re looking to make the next race a better spectacle. With extra grandstands on the way, what are the other changes?

A better track surface

In 2022, the Miami GP faced a lot of criticism for its track surface. It was easily breaking up and suffered from a lack of grip. These problems persisted this year, despite resurfacing. These problems were especially bad offline, which made overtaking tricky. They want Formula 1 to host their feeder series on the track. This will lay more rubber down before the main event, hopefully providing a better race.

Less Static Shocks

This is a very weird problem for Formula 1 teams to face. The Miami GP organizers moved the paddock to the Hard Rock Stadium this year. They did this because teams complained of being crammed last year. This move was a success by itself.

The organizers had to lay down some grass to protect the pitch. This then led to a lot of static electricity being generated around the paddock. It was a little fun seeing legendary teams like Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari complain about static shocks. The organizers have understood this problem, and have promised to come up with a solution next year.

No Night Race, A Sprint is possible

There were some talks about the next Miami GP being a night race. But the organizers were quick to shrug off the idea. While there have been some talks with various promoters of other night races, it isn’t possible for 2024. They did say if Formula 1 asks them to change from a broadcasting perspective, they will consider it.

However, they were interested in the idea of a sprint race. The organizers said that they received a lot of support for the traditional qualifying format from fans. But this won’t deter them from trying out a sprint race to see how it goes.

Will the race be better next year? Can someone other than Max Verstappen and Red Bull win? Will Mercedes or Ferrari put up a challenge? All these are questions we will get answers to in 2024. Till then, stick with us.
