Lionel Messi has shattered the all-time World Cup appearance record after appearing in Argentina’s WC final against France. This is the 35-year-sixth old’s World Cup appearance, with his debut coming in 2006. He has now appeared in 26 games in the WC finals, featuring in two finals, including the one in Qatar.
He goes past German legend Lothar Matthaus, who appeared in every event between 1982 and 1998. Germany’s Miroslav Klose made 24 appearances in the competition. Lionel Messi’s long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo is some way back with 21 games to his name. Paolo Maldini holds the record for the most minutes appeared, but Messi should beat that on Sunday with more than a 30-minute stint on the pitch.
