The quarterfinals clash between Netherlands vs Argentina was a gruesome match between the two heavy giants. Discipline was a major issue in the game as both players and coaching staff from both teams were spotted losing their cool. This prompted the referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz to flash out the yellow card a total of 16 times.

Apart from verbal spats, the players from both sides often confronted each other as brawls broke out during and after the game. Such was the severity of the brawl that Denzel Dumfries of Netherlands received two yellow cards and was ushered off the field after the penalty shootout. After the game, the referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz was criticized by Lionel Messi and Argentine goalie Emi Martinez.

Following the heavy criticism from the Argentine squad, FIFA decided to open disciplinary actions against the Argentine Football Association and the respective players. And therefore, there is a major risk that should Leo Messi be found guilty, he can miss the semifinals against Croatia.

Against Argentina, FIFA has started their investigation on breaching article 12 and 16 which deals with the Misconduct of players and officials and Order and security at matches respectively. Against the Dutch Football Association a breath on article 12 has been applied.

A World Cup record 18 yellow cards were shown as Argentina defeated the Dutch 4-3 on penalties Friday after a 2-2 draw at Lusail Stadium.

The game featured multiple mass confrontations and heated exchanges as the Dutch came back from two goals down to force extra time.
The charges against the Argentina football federation relate to player and staff misconduct and “order and security at matches”, FIFA said in a statement.

“I don’t want to talk about referees because then they will sanction you, but we were scared before the game because we knew what was coming [with Mateu Lahoz]. I can’t say what I think, but FIFA have to look at this. [FIFA] cannot put a referee like that on this game when he is not up to the level,” said Messi.
