Mason Greenwood makes Getafe debut, gets welcomed with demeaning chants

Greenwood was introduced as a substitute for striker Juanmi Latasa at the 75th minute mark

Mason Greenwood, on loan to Getafe from Manchester United, debuted for the Spanish side against Osasuna on Sunday. The forward, who is returning to football after a tumultuous year, was ‘welcomed’ with demeaning chants from Osasuna supporters.

Greenwood was introduced as a substitute for striker Juanmi Latasa at the 75th minute mark.

Following Greenwood’s introduction onto the field at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, a group of Osasuna supporters were reported to have chanted “Greenwood, Die” at the player, according to The Athletic.

Greenwood appeared in his first competitive match since January 2022, when he last featured for Manchester United.

The forward was initially placed on administrative leave by the club following an arrest on suspicion of rape, assault, and coercion. However, all charges were subsequently dismissed in February.

Following the completion of an internal inquiry, the Red Devils granted the player permission to join Getafe.

Greenwood’s transfer to Getafe was completed in the final minutes of the final day of the transfer window.

In a statement, the club said: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

Recently, Getafe coach Jose Bordalas, who took charge of Getafe in April this year, revealed how Greenwood was influenced by Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham for a move to La Liga.

“Greenwood is friends with Bellingham, and he advised him to come to the Spanish league,” Bordalas told Radio Marca.
